Photos from the Black Lives Matter Protest in Downtown London
On Saturday, June 6, 2020, approximately 10,000 people attended the Black Lives Matter protest in downtown London, Ontario. The event, which was organized by a group of young Black women from the city including Keira Roberts, Djemma Toku, and Ghaida Hamdun, started in Victoria Park and featured a march around the downtown area. The protest was held to call attention to systemic racism and police brutality, sparked by the killing of an unarmed Black man, George Floyd, by police officer Derek Chauvin on May 25th in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Andrew Gunn, owner and editor of young & free press, covered the event along with our teenage photographer, Avelea Thorne. Please find below a collection of images. We were inspired by the moments of connection among the protestors, and the palpable sense of hope and resolve in the crowd. While the COVID-19 pandemic loomed large — most of the protestors wore masks — this was definitely a significant, historic, and unforgettable event for London.
